Movie Maker
Is there any way to find an untitled project - other than basic stuff?

I have spent 15 hours on a project that I can not find.
It was saved and re-opened many times. I started this project a couple days
ago, every time moviemaker froze and I had to close it, when I opened it
again it would say searching for.... and my project would come up. I even
hit the save button a couple times, but never named it - Because it was fine
and I wasn't done.

This morning when I opened it and worked on it and it did its freeze thing
and I closed and re-opened it - it was fine. Then after a couple times of
that, when it opened - it opened the last NAMED project I was working on.

The named project was the end part of the new untitled project.

I have used searched, used restore then un-did restore, read 50 websites,
read help here.. I have looked everywhere.

This may not actually be a moviemaker question, more of a Where do I find
something I did 5 hours ago. Is it possible?

Thanks to anyone who can lead me in the correct direction!!

Where did your save it?

I only hit the save button
- Assumed (I hate that word) it was being saved as an untitled project, I
guess I thought it would number it like other programs do or like pictures do
if I started another project...

Well, it's kind of a long shot, but you can try this - it has
occasionally astonished me with it's ability to bring back work lost
several days ago:

Google for, download and install the "Glary Utilities". They're free.
There is an "File Undelete" feature in the program. Run it (expect it
to take a while - 5-10 minutes). It will find anything it can (you may
be amazed at the number of files it finds)and in the right pane it will
show various states of condition of those files, such as "Highly
Recoverable" (Yes!), "Overwritten" (Uh-oh), and so forth. Look for the
file extension of what you were working on, and follow the directions.
The more recently you "lost" or accidentally deleted the file, the
better the chances you will be able to recover it fully. It will
probably have a different or altered name as Glary finds it, as deleting
a file strips it's header - it varies. Good luck, but this has saved my
bacon on a couple of occasions where I "accidentally" deleted a file.
And it doesn't cost anything.

Tony,
Thanks for the help, not sure I will do it, but thanks.

I try stay away from downloading software as I seam to be the one that
always gets the bugs. Unless it is a Microsoft or Known company.

If all else fails I may have to do something I don't want to, but not yet.

I have used programs like that one, Norton has or had something. When I had
to use it one time, you are right I Was Surprised, There were hundreds of
things - if I remember right they were not named but numbered... I crossed my
fingers and chose the first 15 things and Yes I did get my whole excel
workbook back.
Good for emergencies.

I think if I quit trying to find out how to recover it and just go start
again it will be faster.... But dang it I know there has to be a way on a
*computer* for crying out loud -- to get you to what you were doing at a
certain time, Or even what I did with the picture last time (as I added lots
of pictures that are on my computer).

Anyway again thank you, hope I don’t have to resort to it, but thanks.

Well, the default save location for movie maker is,
C:\Documents and Settings\your name\Local Settings\Temp\
It is supposed to do a save every 10 minutes unless that was changed. That
is a hidden folder so you will have to tick the show hidden files and
folders in the folder options panel to view it.

Do a search for all files modified on a particular day. Search for
*.[file ext] to really limit the results.

I could have sworn the extention is MSWMM - But there is absolutly Nothing
there for the last two days.

Thanks anyway.

I appreciate your help.
I have taken your advice and looked and looked and looked.
Yes, I found where it is suppose to save it every 10 minutes, but there is
nothing in the Temp folder that I can open, not with Movie Maker or any of
the other 5 or 6 programs (applications??)

The few I could open were Not related.

I don't know what happened but I can not get to it.

Thanks anyway,
Liz

Hi,

........I could have sworn the extention is MSWMM

That doesn't sound right to me. Try this and see what happens. Open your
movie program, make a small something or other, save it with a name you
can remember, then do a system wide search for that name.

Now take a look at the files extension and see for sure what your
program has been using. Now with that in hand, again do the wildcard
search for all files with that extension, and don't limit to recent
dates as the file you're looking for may actually be registered as older
than your last save date.

Thanks for your response.

It IS MSWMM there is just nothing there.
I have started all over again. Am still curious as to What happened, but
will probable never know.
