I stored my notebook in a cupboard for 6 weeks will I was off island because
of the risk of hurricanes. When I got back I hooked it back up and turned it
on. The notebook appears to boot up properly but I can't make out what's on
the screen. The display shows blocks of colour, flickers and I can't make it
out.
The HP notebook came with hp QuickRestore System Recovery CD's and the
Operating System CD.
I would appreciate comments on the best steps to try and recover?

HP Pavilions that ship with Microsoft Windows XP do
not come with Recovery CDs. Instead, they use a hidden
space (partition) on the hard drive to store the recovery
information.

Read the following article thoroughly, then follow
the steps outlined to perform a "non-destructive"
recovery operation.

If a "non-destructive" recovery will not work, then you'll have
to resort to a "destructive recovery" which will reformat the
drive, thus wiping it clean of all files before Windows XP is
reinstalled.

Have you tried booting up using the safe mode? If you can then the problem
may just be in the video driver.
