can this be done? Logging on to local machine, in system
properties/user profiles it appears as "Unknown". (this
account does not show up on any mmc consoles).

I believed there was an option to GUI"copy" the profile to
another location but can't find it.

Or is it as basic as simply copying the contents of
the "Documents and Setting\"user" folder to the alternate
location where you'd like to use them.

Thanks.

Typically the unknown account shows up because you deleted a user
account that had a profile stored on the local machine.

You can use Explorer to copy the profiles to another location.
or

go to Control Panel -> System Properties -> User Profiles Tab
Highlight the unknown profile and click copy.

Right, sorry I didn't explain myself correctly. I do
believe the account corresponds to a domain account and
then that domain was removed. Is there any way to recover
access to that profile?

The "Copy To" button is grayed out.

Yes, in that case, I suppose the only solution is to copy
the files and folders through explorer (if the new
domain/user account will know how to deal with/resolve
permissions issues.).

Thank you for any additional insights.

Nick.

Sounds like the only practical way is to use Windows Explorer.

I would create a dummy user account first, login with this account to create
the profile folder, logout, then copy your "mystery" profile to the dummy
user profile.
