I've been upgrading since 95 to currently W2K pro(SP4) on
Pentium II - 333 Mhz -128 mgs ram. A week ago wanted to
install HP all in one fax printer and got registry size
error and so couldn't reinstall printer software again
(still can't) and so the journey began. Changed registry
size per instructions in knowledge base. Error remained.
Suspected time to clean out old programs but while still
operational they are not listed in add/remove tool. Tried
registry edit (risky for me - a rookie) and yikes - ended
up needing to reinstall 2000 to wind up with multiple
boot. Edited boot.ini file per instructions. Now
potentially copies made of operating system when
reinstalled windows 2000 pro. Got errors with office XP
and had to reinstall office 97 then XP. I'm alive now but
don't know what to do next and think I've made the
registry worse. Still can't install anything because of
registry size. Used Installation wizard from Resource Kit
and still old programs don't show. What should I do to
have the greatest impact on recovery size in registry?

You may be able to use regback.exe and regrest.exe from the resource kit to
compact the registry. But id this is an upgrade from Win95, I would wipe the
drive and start a new install.

I would have to concur. A fresh install - not update - after this many
years would be my choice.

Lessee.....
Download and run the old regclean 4.1 from M$ to clear up any inconsistancies in the registry
Then you can run RegCompact which will clean out the freespace in the registry hives.
Finally the biggie; Settings/Control Panel/System/Advanced/Performance Options/Virtual Memory
Click Change and one of the options that comes up will let you change the maximum size of the
registry. Yeah, I know, you could probably do that in the first place and get by. But you may not
need to if you follow the cleaning/compacting first. Over the years I suspect you ended up with a
lot of crap in there that needs cleaning out. Chancy enough all the OS upgrades over the years
without a single fresh install....
