recover partition

Hi I have a Dell with 40 Gb HD
partition 1 is 20Gb
the remaining 20 Gb is not partitoned
I want to reload Win2000 and set partition 1 to the full 40 Gb but I can not
see how to do this in the setup. It will let me partition the remaining 20
Gb as Drive D but I what I want to do is set the full 40 Gb as Drive C.

If you don't care about the contents of the drive, you could just delete
the existing partition, then repartition the entire drive as one large
partition and install W2K. Otherwise you'll need a third party
partitioning tool to resize the existing partition. Such tools are
Partition Magic from Power Quest, Partition Commander from V-Com, Paragon
Partition Manager, BootitNG, etc.

Are you SURE? Are you booting from the Win2K CD-ROM?

Neither MS-DOS nor Windows will delete the partition that is currently
booted. So, if you boot into Win2K on C: and then ask it to delete C:,
that's like asking it to commit suicide - or at least, to saw off the limb
it's sitting on - and it will refuse to do it. But, if you boot from
something other than C: - such as from the CD-ROM - then it will happily
delete the 20 GB C:, after which you can create a new 40 GB C:, format it,
and install Win2K there.

Whoops! I just reread your first post and see that this is a Dell computer.
Dell does some proprietary things to its computers, including creating some
unorthodox partitions, I've heard. You might want to get some specific
guidance from Dell directly, or from the Usenet newsgroup
alt.sys.pc-clone.dell. This boils down to a Dell question, not a Windows
question.
