recover deleted files

Hi!

I accidentally removed my internet starting homepage
containing a lot of links (+tricky html I don't want to
redo if I don't have to) by moving it to a new destiny
and then editing the file on its new destiny (I thought I
copied the file, but apparently I moved it).
So the file hasn't ended up in the trash bin. Can I still
recover it from the original directory in some way? Can I
do a file search for contents of the file or is that
useless? Does notepad have some sort of memory for files
that have been edited??

Help me!!!

Hello,

I'm sorry to say, but it sounds like the file is gone. You could try
third-party applications to get back files by reading the harddrive (the
data is not really deleted, unless something else has overwritten that part
of the harddrive). One such application is FileRestore,
http://www.winternals.com/products/repairandrecovery/filerestore.asp , but
i'm sure there are free ones available as well.

Also, since this was a web page, it is possible that your browser has this
file cached. It might be worth to check this folder: C:\Documents and
Settings\<user name>\Local Settings\Temporary Internet Files (you can reach
this folder from IE, click Tools->Internet Options, click Settings, click
View Files).

Just remember, if you choose the first option, use the computer as little as
possible, to minimize the risk of overwriting the data on the harddrive,
that contains this file. If you try the second option, do not browse any
websites, as that can empty the cache and remove the file you are looking
for (if it's there).

Yes :-)

So to be really sure, you should remove the hdd, and insert it into another
computer as slave. But now it is starting to get really advanced and a
time-taken process. So unless the file is very very important, i don't think
it's worth spending all the time.

Good point. Many file recovery programs can run directly from a floppy
or CD-ROM, to avoid this exact scenario.
