Hi
Like Roddy I have been trying to record back to tape in my dv recorder, (Dell Inspiron 2650 to Canon mv600i) and cannot get the computer to oblige. Camera and firewire card check out fine. Does anyone know of anything that may be causing this. Have great support working on this but feel guilty taking up their time.

Hi there,

I have the 500i.

I am guessing you are using the firewire card that came with your camera
(I had one with mine).

Did you set the camera to VCR mode before trying to write back to it?

Does the tape have the write protect slider enabled?

Try removing the card and very carefully clean the contacts with a damp
cloth (no solvents) and perhaps use the hoover to suck out any dust/hair
that may have lodged in the PCI slot. Try changing PCI slot used for the
card. The current slot may have a defect (not properly soldered etc.)

Check out the settings in your device manager to see if there is a
conflict (There is a tutorial on Hard Drives on my web site that will show
you how to check out a device. The procedure is much the same for all
devices)

If all above fails start considering the possibility that either the
card or cable or even the camera have a fault

Best Wishes.....John Kelly

Try saving the movie as a DV-AVI file on your hard drive and using the WinDV
utility (link on my Digital Camcorders > Intro page) to copy it to the
camcorder.

It'll help you sort out computer issues from cable/firewire card ones.

Me again!
So far the camera and firewire card have responded favourably to a desk top computer at work, Canon NZ's computer and an NEC laptop. They wont work on a Compaq Presario laptop or a Sony Vaio laptop and my own Dell!!! I have tried Win DV to no avail,it says it is recording but doesn't. My kind helper also tried DVIO. Getting profoundly irritated!!!

Hi there,

Yes, laptops are nor "really" meant for this sort of thing. They have all
sorts of battery saving options which if not disabled will restrict the
core voltage of the CPU, making everything run slower but extending the
life of the battery charge. If you think on it, what is the point of making
the battery last longer if everything takes longer to execute....seems daft
to me.

Anyway, there is a good document on this at Microsoft click this
http://tinyurl.com/24e9o to get there.

Hi,
This would be the time I lend the wretched camera to a colleague at work and leave my ac adapter there!!! To tell the truth I had had enough of the camera anyway, but you could be right about the power saving stuff, its certainly not set on always on, so will try it out in a day or so and let you know.Explains why it worked like a charm on the desktop today, (again). I probably wont use that feature too much anyway as I can burn to cd and bore children overseas with family videos that way, but its maddening to have a feature you can't use and not know why!!! Especially as movie maker is such fun with titles and transitions etc. Thank you for your help and for "listening" to me wittering on
