Joel,
I no longer have a phone modem, it's out in the garage in a junk box. ;-)
But I remember there being a connection between it and the sound card.
Got it. USRobotics Model 0613. This was an internal modem.
ATAPI Audio Connector
"This is the audio ATA packet interface (ATAPI) connector that runs from the
sound card to the modem. This is connected to the sound card using an ATAPI
cable. This enables the modem to use the voice features including the
telephone answering device."

My sound card, Sound Blaster PCI512, has an internal TAD connector that was
connected to the ATAPI Audio Connector on the modem.
Apparently, TAD allows you to make a call with the microphone and speakers
connected to the sound card. They will pass your voice via the sound card to
the modem and will pass the incoming voice from the modem via the sound card
to the speakers. Must be how the telemarketers do it.
Well that was a little trip down memory lane.
