Recording from VCR to computer

I just got a new computer. Can someone please walk me through the basics of
recording from a VCR to Windows Moviemaker?

What I need to know is:
1. How do I know if I have a digitizing card installed on the computer? Just
because I have DVD recording software & Windows Moviemaker doesn't guarantee
that I have a digitizing card, right? Device Manager lists "Legacy Video
Capture Devices," but I can't tell if this is a brand name or a reference to
old video cards.

2. How do I plug in the VCR into the computer? The computer has a VGA-in
plug & some USB plugs with symbols I can't identify. Will I need special
cables or an adapter?

Apologies if these questions sound impossibly dumb, but I'm just starting
down this path.

Thanks very much,
Andrea

Perhaps it helps to explain I work at a school library, and we wish to
transfer our videotape collection to digitized files stored on a server
Hence the question: how to record from a VCR to computer.

Thanks, PJ, I did go to your site.

This is looking more and more promising. I presume I can get an IE 1394
adapter for a VCR cable at RadioShack?

Thanks again,
Andrea

As John says you cannot use a firewire (ieee1394) pci card to do this. If
you have just bought the pc, can you ask the vendor whether you have an
analogue capture facility on the pc?

Hi Graham,

We found a USB thing (Belkin) that we were able to download current drivers
for. Our setup is working just fine, so very many thanks to you & John for
all the advice.

Best regards,
Andrea
