I have a few PC's with Win2000 and XP.
More and more music DVD's are coming out and I've been evaluating the best way to get them onto the PC. I'd like to copy some of
the songs from music DVD's to my PC ( to view while I'm on my PC) - not the whole DVD - just individual songs. To view/llisten to as
I do now with mp3's

It's not like a Cd - drag+drop . I view the contents of the DVD in Explorer and - different files in different folders ... What's an
easy way to get into separate files ? Any pointers to a "how-to " area.
I tried the ms.multimedia newsgroup - only 11 messages there.
Is there some software already out there to do this ?
I insert DVD, - it saves to HDD as files.

So let's say it's a 2 hr DVD - how do I end up with the 15 songs as individual (mpg ?) files on my pc rather than one 2 hr file ?
The DVD menu knows where each song starts/ends (since I can click SEARCH and it goes to the start of the next song) - so can it
automatically save files as file 1, file2 etc and I rename ?

Also, is there an easy way to record just the audio ? Not one 2 hour wav file , but separate files for each song. Or must I use the
audio line out => record it for each song - give it a name - do the next.
Generally when I come across something like this , someone else already has a solution.

You need to use good video editor to grab what you want from a video file.
Search for video editor software and play around with the demo versions
until you get what suits you best... Video editors range from very expensive
(professional type with huge bells and buttons) to free "no-frills" type.

I don't think there is an easy solution to this. At least not one that
is legal. Unless the DVD isn't CSS protected (and most are) or it
provides unprotected version of the songs in avi, mpg, or something
else, you need to rip/decrypt/edit the files. First step would be to
rip the appropriate tracks off the DVD. Once you do that you would
need to make sure they were properly decrypted and to convert them to a
form you like. Then edit that video to only have the single track.
Most likely more hassle than its worth.
The files on the DVD are encrypted vob. You need to decrypt/rip the
vob files using DeCSS (try googleing for info). Then convert from the
resulting file into something you want to manage. If each track is its
own chapter on the DVD then you are probally done. Otherwise you will
need to split the chapter into the respective tracks.

Regarding just the audio, probally the same applies. You should be
able to split the audio off from the video with minimal hassle, but the
chapters probally have more than one track in them.

excellent, thanks.
I just tried the tomdownload link and saw reference to :
http://www.flydownload.com/software/images/dvd_audio_ripper_big.gif

That looks like exactly what I want - that is even one of the DVD albums I want to use.

As for other reply re: being illegal.
Isn't it OK to copy for myself ? Or do we not want to go there ?

Not like someone's tracking me here, but I really do own these DVD's - just want to be able to view/listen without having the DVD
playing. I'd like the flexibility that I have with MusicMatch - to have all of my music (and now video) on file and use it like a
jukebox. I have a lot of this old stuff on VHS - from live broadcasts - but so much nicer on DVD, digital audio.

For those that might like it, I just got Queen: Live in Wembley Stadium now on DVD - $10
Also: Elton John - Dream Ticket (2005) at WalMart for $20. It's excellent. 7 Hours long. For $20 !
DVD1 = The Greatest Hits: One Night Only DVD - which costs $20 to buy alone !??
DVD2 = The Royal Opera House - with students at his former school as the orchestra
DVD3 = Ephesus: The Great Ampitheatre : Just him onstage at the piano
DVD4 = Elton in Four Decades = Miscellaneous - videos through the years /behind the scenes.

This is the kind of stuff I'm trying to put on the PC. BestBuy/CompUSA have had Seagate 120gb, 160gb drives for $29 after rebate the
last few months so I have plenty of space.

Thanks again.

hey Bobb
Illegal or not, just know Movie Studios are too nervous... too edgy and
armed to the teeth looking for someone to scapegoat. With a lot of bucks in
their war chest they really can be a pain in the a**. Might be a better idea
to "see no evil, hear no evil and no speak no evil... " (of course, of DVD
ripping.)
