How do I capture a video tap back to the camera? A friend has videos of his
family on VHS tape and he now wants them on a CD. How do I do this?

Hi there,

You need a device attached to your computer. Dazzle used to market one...Dazzle
were recently bought out by Pinacle and if memory serves they dropped the
hardware side of Dazzle stock, so you might have problems in that direction.
Dazzle products are still on sale at my local computer store, it could be worth
visiting yours.

The other way is to use the Video-Out option of your graphics card. DO NOT
confuse this with the video port your monitor plugs into. You will have to
refer to the usuallysmall manual that comes with your graphics card to
determine whether your card is capable of doing this. You should also be aware
that few graphics cards that are capable of this actually produce a really good
signal . The best cards usually have the title VIVO (Video In and Video Out).
Gainward do a rather good one based on NVidia..mine cost £250 at the moment
that would be about $400 - $450. There are of course cheaper ones.

To find out more about VIVO type VIVO CARDS in the address bar of Internet
Explorer.

If I'm not mistaken, and if I am not misunderstanding
what Joseph wants to do (either of which is quite likely)
then if he has either a SCART 21-pin connector or an S-
video socket on the back of his VCR and if he has an AV
cable for his camera, there is another way which doesn't
require any further expense.
And on that basis, despite all due reverence to John who
just helped me with invaluable advice on a problem I had,
may I suggest that it is a BETTER solution? Well it works
for me, anyway!
Stick the camera cable into either the SCART or S-video
socket on the VCR. Chuck the VHS tape into the VCR and
hit Play. Bung the camera into Record mode. When done,
capture into MM2 in the usual way, edit and output to CD
or wherever.
I have done this a number of times, no probs...

Hi CW,

Have just re-read the original message....I think you are correct and I was
wrong. I assumed that the video was going via a computer for editing purposes.
