Recording audio w/ MM1

I use Movie Maker 1 to record live bluegrass with my laptop. The resulting
wma audio files are great and easy to edit and burn audio CD's. I'm reluctant
to upgrade to SP-2 because MM2 won't allow audio recordings with just a
microphone. It asks for a video camera to be attached. Is there any way to
upgrade to SP-2 and keep the old Movie Maker 1 ? Is there a better recording
program that can record in wma format?

Just rename the executable moviemk.exe to something else moviemk1.exe and
upgrade. The upgrade doesnt remove the DLLs used by MM1 so both versions can
work in parallel.

Hello,

The best possible Free audio recording program has to be Audacity. I have to
say that if you find need for more than a third of its options/abilities I will
be very surprised. There is a link to Audacity on my website (Great Links). The
very minor draw back as far as you are concerned is that it does not save as
WMA....the nearest format that would be useful to you is either MP3 or WAV,
which I think is what the base format of .cda is...not certain of that.

So even though it does not exactly meet your requirements...I do urge you to go
get it and try it out.

Thanks for the reply.
I wanted to stay with the WMA file format as it is very compact. I have a 20
gb hard drive on the laptop with so much stuff on it that I have little free
space. MM1 is perfect for recording in most ways. It has a few shortcomings
in that you don't have a level meter to see if the sound level is too low or
high. Also, I have recorded for 5 hours on battery by just switching to fresh
batteries and the resulting file was so large that I had trouble breaking it
into manageable size chunks so that I could then work with it in Nero 5 Wave
Editor. I wouldn't have nearly enough room to do this in the WAV format and
am not familliar enough with MP3.
I'll try Audacity and see if it meets my needs.

Thank you.
This is just the very information that I needed. I will gladly upgrade to
SP-2 now. I have 3 computers and the laptop is the only one still on SP-1.

I may have a related issue here... After the upgrade to SP2, I am unable to
record audio on MM2 (the Record button has disappeared). When I try to
capture video (want to capture audio only), it says "A video capture device
was not detected." Is there any way to get around this, short of having to
(re)install anything?

Thanks.

As a guy with a history of doing digital home recording,
it wouldn't have occurred to me to use MM2 to record
audio-only. Not that it wouldn't work -- I'm just used to
a multitrack environment. :)

Lots of freebie software that can record audio out there
from the line-in or (horrors!) the mic jack. Sony Digital
Entertainment's (formerly Sonic Foundry's) ACID Xpress
is a great free audio recording & looping tool.

Issue is that I don't want to be hit by adware or freeware that slows down my
computer. Is there any existing software already installed with Windows I
could use, or is there a good freeware I could use without irritating pop-ups
or CPU being slowed down?
