Record the duration of edit time

When I right click on a doc and chose "Summary" the very last item is called
"Edit time".
I am assuming this keeps track of the time the file was open. But it is
always blank!

How can I set it to actually keep track of the time I am editing that
document?

Steve

Hi Steve,

I believe I am correct in saying that the Edit Time is updated when the
document is saved and closed.

I see Edit Time even before saving, but it is started again from zero when
you save. Sometimes when I forget to start my timer to keep track of
billable time, it is helpful to check the Edit Time, especially if I
remember to do it before saving if I've worked on the document for some
appreciable time.

If I open the document and then try to check Edit Time by right clicking the
document icon (while the doc is open) and clicking Properties, the "Summary"
tab does not appear. All I see is the "General" tab.

Windows ME
Word 2000

But anyway, the point has become moot because I was looking for a way to
know the total editing time over a long period when the document has been
opened and closed many times. I am inferring from your answer, Suzanne, that
there is no way to automatically keep a running total that reflects the
editing time over a period of days or weeks. Thank you, anyway, for your
kind response.

Steve

Edit Time is cumulative over the life of the document, starting with when it
was saved. When you open File | Properties, the Summary tab (not General)
should be the one displayed by default. And you can easily see the
Statistics tab of File Properties (which contains the "Total editing time")
merely by clicking on it.

OH!!........ OH!..........OH!
Okay, now I get it.

What I was doing was minimizing the open document and right clicking the
icon on the desktop (the icon that you normally use to open the document in
the first place!) When you do that you only get one tab and it's the General
tab.

It did not occur to me to click on the "File" button in the upper left of
the open document and then check properties.

(Sound of palm slapping forehead................ hard.)

Thanks.

I do this so often that I added a button for it at the far left end of the
toolbar. I used the key icon.

Hi Suzanne,

I don't think that can be right about the edit time starting from zero after
a save. I have a document open at the moment that is displaying total
editing time of 5,609 minutes. I've now just saved it and it shows 5,611.
After closing and re-opening it, it is 5,611.

Yes, there's something funny about the edit times of some of my documents.
Some of them say "0" and some of them show a very small number (<5) when I
know the document has been open for hours. But then others show a
respectable, believable number.

Saving the document does not change or reset the number.
Closing and reopening doc has no affect
Renaming the doc has no affect.
Copying to new location: no affect.

The only thing that seems to reset the minutes is doing a "Save As" and
changing the name.

Hope you heavyweights play with it and give me some insights.

I realize I was unclear. I should have said the edit time starts from zero
when you Save As. What I meant was that you can accumulate edit time in an
unsaved, unnamed document, but when you save and name it *for the first
time* the edit time is reset. It is reset again if you save under a
different name.
