what are the microsoft recommended partion sizes, if any,
for a new system, 160g sata drive, with one o/s and ntfs?
is there an advantage to having multiple partitions? what
is the drawback to a single partitioned drive? reference
sourses would be helpful. thanks for the help.

A good place to start is at http://aumha.org/win5/a/parts.htm

I would certainly not have such a large disk in one piece - that is like
throwing all your personal letters and financial statements into a
cupboard with last month's magazines. I'd suggest 16 GB for system and
programs, maybe a similar amount for important modest size data
(correspondence, spreadsheets etc) and the rest for the really big data
files.

Note BTW that 160 is decimal billion. The system works in a binary
based near equivalent, 7 percent bigger, so your 160 will appear to be
about 150 of those
