HI,

We are planning to upgrade our 2000 AD's to 2003 and since we are going to
change the HW as well. What is the recommended HW Specs are required from HP
products

No of users 700
No of PC 500
No of group Policy 3
Both AD are CG
1st is running DHCP & DNS
2nd is running DNS

Please Advise.

You aren't doing anything out of the ordinary so the hardware needed won't
be something on the upper end.

I would buy a dual proc with at least 2 gig of ram (RAM is so cheap I would
buy 4) with hw raid (Raid 1 mirrored) and about 50 gig after the mirror. I
would purchase two duplicate hw boxes as well. The nic speed should be as
fast as your lan can handle, most hw manufacturers have 1 gig available and
they can be down rev'd to your lan speed. Partition the system/boot to 12
gig and leave the rest for a second partition and if there is any software
(CIM) to be installed, etc... place it on this second partition. Leave the
o/s partition as clean as can be.

As far as specific hw you should contact your HP var.

I have some articles on both upgrading your forest and decommissioning a dc.

A pair of DL360s with 2x73GB RAID1, 4GB RAM, 2xCPU, Redundant PSU, 2003 R2
Standard will do you fine. Add in an ILO Advanced Key if you have the
money - it's well worth it.

You would have trouble buying (new) hardware that
isn't capable of doing what you want.

Spend the majority of your extra money on FAULT
TOLERANCE (the power supplies, hardward RAID,
backup devices, processors, or just two separate DCs,
etc.)

AND Remember to add a GOOD battery backup and
(reasonably) frequent battery replacement.

A pure DC is not a very labor intensive job for a
small domain as you plan.

Making it do other jobs changes the rules however.
