Can anyone please recommend their preference for defragmentation
software and why they prefer it over the others.

Many thanks!

Vista's defrag. Why take a chance with your NTFS using a vendor to maybe
save a few minutes?

Vista's defrag is all you'll ever need. I would suggest setting it to
run nightly instead of once a week as it is scheduled by default.

If you would prefer to buy one, then pop for the money to buy
Diskeeper 2008. I doubt that there is a better one available.

Google to your heart's content for kudos of each.

Forgot to mention: I popped for Diskeeper myself.

Alot of people seem to recommend Diskeeper. I've had a look at it and
it seems to be strong for automatic defragmenting (and not for manual
defrag) which is not something I like. I just prefer have it running
once a week overnight. Perhaps Perfectdisk would be a better option
for me?

I have been using Diskeeper for quite awhile - very happy with it - worth
the money IMO.

Diskeeper in my experience is overpriced and garbage. Microsoft's
defrag is a joke and very slow. UltraDefrag is quite, fast and free. I
run it daily and don't even know it's running. doesn't slow down the
system at all.

I'll whisper now, so the fanboy morons don't hear. It's Open Source.
You know, what the Microsoft faithful hate with a passion. <snicker>

Download the trial version (30 days) and run it through the paces.

You can have it run automatically 24x7 or however you like: you choose
the hours it will run and not run. When it's running, you won't even
know it.

You can also run it manuall only, if you like.

It's great.

Diskeeper does manual defrag. If you are looking for bells and whistles then go for some other one. Diskeeper is the best defragmenter available

Peter says and I quote "Diskeeper is the best defragmenter available"
That is your opinion Peter and rightfully so, but would you care to
elaborate a little more as to why you believe it's the best?

Some interesting links if you type in Google " Diskeeper vs Perfectdisk
I find this one interesting as a Rep from both sides have posted here.

Figures - You have no clue how decent software works. You must stop that
drinking at apply at Taco-Bell for that counter job.

Thanks for all your replies. I have a few questions about Diskeeper:

• Is there really no notice? I run FPS games like Call of Duty 4 and
also Microsoft FSX. Will these be unaffected?
• How does Diskeeper's I-FAAST sit with Vista's SuperFetch?
• I installed the trial version. I can't find the Boot Time
Defragmentation. There is no icon or option as there should be as
stated in the manual.
• For automatic defragmentation does the program have be running with
the user interface or does just the Diskeeper service need to be
running?

Many thanks!

A few things I forgot to ask.

With manual defragmentation I cannot find any information relating to
estimated time to completion. Is this available? Also I can't find an
option to shutdown the system when complete. Is it possible to do this?

Boot Time Defragmentation: it had problems with SP1 and is currently
being reworked.

As for the rest, you need to spend some time looking things over and
reading the freakin' manual.

You haven't had nearly enough time to do that yet.

Your trial is for 30 days. Get with it.

Don't waste your money. Vista's built-in defrag works fine. Furthermore,
it doesn't mess with the file placement algorithms which Vista uses to
optimise start up times.

There is really no point whatsoever in wasting your money on Diskeeper.

Forget about fragmentation and get on with actually using your computer.

It's great.

I tried Diskeeper years ago. It started up automatically ignoring the
schedule I set for it thereby trashing a overnight render of a video I
was making since it tried to defrag a drive in use that was still
being actively written to. I called their support department and
basically they told me what I just experienced couldn't happen.

These idiots STILL send nagging emails every couple weeks to get me to
try Diskeeper. In spite of me making it perfectly clear I would NEVER
use their crap again. And no, they wouldn't give a refund for their
defective software either. I think it's garbage. Your mileage may
vary, but why buy some crap when you can get something free that's
faster and better?

I'll put in a vote for Raxco PerfectDisk. Been using it for years with WinXP
and your defragment chore is greatly reduced.
I haven't used it with Vista at all so can't give a recommendation on that.
My Vista system is just a learning tool plaything right now.
I have multiple drives divided into multiple partitions (JBOD) and have
allocated one partition for database files & cache that change daily.
With PerfectDisk my defragmentation chore has gone from weekly to monthly if
not bi-monthly.

Don't beat up your hard drives with daily 24hr defragmentation. All my disks
(Raptors, 15k SCSI, etc) are approaching their 5 year end of warranty time
in the next 4 months with no failures.

Hi Distorted Vision,

Let me try to answer your questions. I apologize for the numerous links, but
they answer your questions in more detail than I could write here.

(1) There will be no adverse impact of Diskeeper on other running
applications including games. InvisiTasking - the technology that drives the
Diskeeper 2008 resource usage will *always* give priority to other resources.
Please try this yourself when you are evaluating the trial version of
Diskeeper. Run Diskeeper in the automatic defrag mode and use your PC as you
normally would.

More information on InvisiTasking can be found at our website or this
Diskeeper blog article
http://www.diskeeperblog.com/archives/2006/10/dont_bogart_my.html

(2) More on I-FAAST, caching etc
http://www.diskeeperblog.com/archives/2006/09/inside_ifaast.html

(3) Boot-time defragmentation is currently disabled in Vista/SP1 for
Diskeeper 2008 (build 781) due to incompatibilities. It will be re-instated
soon through an update.
Please see the following links.
http://www.diskeeperblog.com/archives/2008/04/new_diskeeper_2_1.html
and
http://www.diskeeperblog.com/archives/2008/07/field_testers_n.html

(4) For automatic defragmentation, the GUI does not need to be active/open,
but the Diskeeper Service should be set on automatic and running. All you
need to do is right click on the relevant volume and ensure that automatic
defragmentation is enabled. (Or during the installation itself where such an
option to automatically defrag the system is selected by default)

Hope this helps.

Best regards

Personally I prefer Raxco's Perfect Disk.
