My wife needs reliable printer for mainly printing essays. Speed is not too
important but cost of ink cartridges is. Like to print photo's for kids fun
but this is secondary.
Budget £75 - £125
Good links in UK would be nice too.

Go for the Canon i450D. You should be able to find it on Froogle for
around $50. The quality of photos is outstanding, and the cost of
cartridges is cheap (around $8 black, $15 color). It also has a
built-in 6-in-1 card reader.
 
I'd get a i560, the cartridge cost is lower in the long run. The text
quality is better than I expected on ordinary multipurpose paper.
 
Yes go for the i560! or if you can go just that bit more then the Canon i865
is a real bargin as this has 5 ink tanks and will last for ages...
