I have a Dell Server with duel 2.8 Xeon Processors, 2GB RAM and 2 80GB 360
SCSI Hard Drives.

I have around 30 Users using terminal services, with office apps word, excel
and outlook.

The problem im having is that the servers cpu seems to run at 100% most of
the time, we did have a spyware problem in the past but this has been sorted
now.

Whats the recommendations for a terminal server, how many users it should
have, how many apps should it be running etc?

There are several possibilities;

-What virus software are you running and have you excluded specific
directories in the realtime scanning. This will tax your processors.

-What is your throughput? If bandwidth is taxed then you may see higher
processor utilization. Have you tried adding a second NIC?

-Did you install Office using the recommended process from MS? e.g.,
TERMSRVR.MST

It is running Norton Anti-Virus Corporate Edition and I’m not sure how I can
limit it to certain directories as the realtime scan is only set to scan
local drives?

As far as bandwidth goes the server is only running 1 NIC at the moment, we
have users connecting through VPN's at 2 remotes sites and some connecting in
the office at which the servers are based. We have a 2mbs SDSL link from the
office containing the Server and both remote sites run a 1mbps SDSL link
however I am currently unsure of how to accurately gauge the bandwidth usage?

Do you have a link to a KB article or other which details the MS recommended
office install you speak of as I am unsure of how my predecessor installed
the applications?.

Thanks in advance.

Which version of Norton? If it's current, you should be able to go into
CONFIGURE \ FILE SYSTEM AUTO_PROTECT and select under OPTIONS 'Exclude" then
check the folders where the applications are running.

*** To test if this is the issue, simply stop the NAV service from running
and see if the system resourses return to normal. Make sure you stop
Real-time scanning and the scan engine.
