TurboNote - http://turbonote.com - there's a free version & a paid-for
version. I've had the free version for a few years now, works very nicely.
I did look at Stickies, but iirc it can't open only one note at a time,
which made it useless for me.

(Probably open source).

This is not freeware.
There is a growing trend of shareware and trialware authors and
marketers to announce something as "free" download. This means that they
give you the right to download it for free not using it for free. The
next trend i suppose will be to charge for downloading trialware and
demoware. Next will be virus and worms writers doing the same. "I will
infect your computer, use it as spam relay, but first you have to pay
me." yeah

Ummm...yes it is :-). There are two products on the site - TurboNote &
TurboNote+. The first is freeware, the second shareware.

Not the case here. I've been using TurboNote for years without paying
anything. The company provide support for the free version as well as the
paid one (good support too). It's not infected, it's not shareware, & it's
not trialware.

Yes, there is a freeware version: an ancient v3.4, the shareware one is
v5.3.

But my comment was correct because:
1) You didn't tell what version was freeware
2) The front page doesn't say there is a freeware version, only show the
shareware version and "free download"

The OP asked for a recommendation. I gave one. It's a good program, better
than any of the other free stickynote programs I've tried (even those which
are much newer than the free version). Beginning to wish I hadn't bothered.

The "SafeNotes" part of the free RoboForm program is great for notes,
etc. I keep a link to this in my QuickLanch taskbar and can call up
any notes instantly. Wouldn't be without it!
