A friend of mine currently is using Win 2000, as am I, and he is
thinking of buying a new computer. He seems to think Windows XP is more
stable than Win 2000. That was never my impression, but maybe newer
versions of XP give it an edge over
Windows 2000?

Also, how well does a RAID system work under Windows, as he
is heavily concerned about backups.

Would he be safe going into Windows for 64 bit processors, or is that
system still ironing out problems. Would this 64 bit operating system
be similar to
Windows 2000, or is it significantly redesigned, aside from the obvious
hardware issues
of handling the bigger data paths.

1. XP is more stable, secure, and faster... Or so they tell us. Seems to be
to me but, then again, what do I know?
2. RAID works just famously, hardware or software? If price is not an object
go hardware.
3. XP 64 bit edition bit is stable enough, it's just like XP Pro. It,
itself, is a lot faster. More and more app authors are starting to take
advantage of both 64 bit increases and multiple core CPUs so the combination
of the two is the only direction I'd personally look at this point in time
for a system upgrade.

To add;
Mirror raid is NOT an alternative for a backup eg
One side gets corrupted, they both do.
Depending on controler you may not know which side has failed
A Raid built with one controler cannot, usually, be seen by another controler
and that may extend to controler firmware versions.
From experience I would be vary wary of relying on mobo raid controlers.

There are many posts, on various ng's regarding hw driver
problems/unavailability for win64
