Having lots of intermittent problems including dead USB's, want something I can get and still

The trick is being shed of the ICH5 Southbridge. Plenty of S478 boards
are using ICH5, which means unless you want a repeat of your USB
problems, then stay away.
Perhaps an SIS based board could be a replacement ? (I guess I'm
just not a big fan of Via based boards, and on the ATI boards,
check if the BIOS has memory timing settings. Download the manual
first, for any board, and check that the BIOS has a full
feature set, before buying.)

While the USA site doesn't list it, there are 915 based S478 boards
on here. You get to keep processor and RAM, but will need a
PCI Express video card. It gives you an Intel chipset, but uses
the ICH6 instead of the ICH5. You may have trouble finding boards
like this in North America.

It is hard to find a good dual channel S478 motherboard, without
an ICH5 on it :-(
