are there any good networking textbooks which deal specifically with
Windows networks ? I don't want yet another TCP/IP primer, I need a
book on how WINS, DHCP, DNS, PDCs etc all fits together in a Windows
network.

Suggestions very welcome

I think _Practical TCP/IP..._ by Mansfield is a great textbook. For
your needs, it shows all examples on a Linux box and a Windows
box. The tools it uses, like tcpdump, run on both systems.

After that, if you need more info about WIndows networking I'd take a
look at the books and documentation produced by the Samba folks. I've
found that for lots of Windows things the Linux people have documented
things that Bill Gates thinks we should just accept as magic.

Thanks for the suggestion - I just read through the table of contents
on Amazon and it looks very good, so I've ordered myself a copy

cheers - Griff

"Microsoft Windows 2000 TCP/IP Protocols and Services/Technical Reference"

IT Professional Series of Microsoft Press

'though the title contains '2000', it's equally valid for any machine that
uses TCP protocols. Addressed using the DARPA model, so OSI model is pretty
close.

So you get *ALL* the techical stuff on IP, IGMP, IP4/6, UDP, TCP, DHCP, DNS,
WINS, IPSec, VPN, HTTP, FTP, SMTP, IPP and CIFS. It's ~500 pages and I read
parts of it every night before I go to sleep :-)

Chuck

PS - I think it's about $50, and there MAY be an updated (ie. 2003/XP
version)
