Hi,

Good advice would be much appreciated.

1. I need to print CD sticky-labels. A printer which takes the sheet
straight through without bending it would be best.

2. Obviously, I want good detailed resolution, but the finish is
important too. It has to be waterproof.

3. The other thing is that I am sick of buying printers which require
cartridges that cost an absolute fortune. I've never had a colour
printer before, so I am wary of the possible expense. I know some
printers won't take anything but a specific kind of cartridge which has
to be bought at great expense.

Any good recommendations which satisfy these three requirements, folks?

Cheers,
Nell.

Well, if it has to be colour, then it's Hobson's choice, I'm afraid. Epson
are the only company, that I know of at least, that produce printers with
waterproof inks. The C62/C64/C84/C84 Photo range uses their DURABrite inks
which they guarantee waterproof. JetTec make excellent compatibles, however
I'm not sure if they produce the pigmented inks - Tony'll be along shortly
to tell you.

I haven't dug into the C84 capabilities yet but from reviews it seems the
only all pigmented ink printer. It doesn't handle CD printing. JetTec
produce the Lightfast and pigmented ink cartridges due in a couple of weeks.
The Epson 950 does have specs suggesting CD printing but is dye based. This
is fast becoming one of the best selling cartridges - so indicating many
satisfied users - and that the JetTec pricing is right.
It might be worth glancing at the Canon i865 which uses a pigmented black
ink in the high capacity tank with colour being dye based.
In all cases the JetTec cartridges are available so you roughly half your
costs.
Look for the other thread - a few days ago- with David Issacs in Australia,
on printer ink costs as the PC-Pro reviews came up with the C84 as the
cheapest and next the Canon.
I use the C80 still for invoice and waterproof label printing and it has
lasted 2 plus years now with a fair amount of work.

Forgot to mention that all the pigmented inks are available for refillers in
litre and a few gallon containers - but they do cost a few quid. The
Lightfast is optimised to produce better resolution on gloss finishes
avoiding the Panda ( black and white) contrast effect.

Thanks Tony and Cerridwen !

Phew! This is a mine-field! SO complicated. Drawing from your replies
(and from other recent messages) it seems that the Canons are easy to
refill and the misery of refilling is, in the long-run, good economics.

It sounds like the Epsons can throw up cartridge problems sooner or
later.

But it also sounds like I need to consider the waterproof question, if
the Epson is the only company that will provide me with colour labels
that won't run if baby dribbles on them.

(By the way, I'm not thinking of printing directly onto a CD, only
printing onto the A4 sheets, from which you then later peel the round
sticky-backed label and press that onto the CD surface.)

So, for one reason or the other I am thinking I ought to go and
investigate the Canon i560. I live in a remote part of mid-Wales, so
that ain't going to be that easy!

Thanks again for your help.

Nell.

Wow at last someone in Wales who uses a computer :-) We distribute from
Abertillery - that's the civilised part not far from Newport and Cardiff.
None of the Canon's have waterproof colour but use for instance the JetTec
BCI-3 pigmented ink as Black.
You're just as easy checking the specs on-line as most resellers seldom have
a full range - and most assistants are not always exactly knowledgeable
apart from their incentive sales.
If it is Canon the i865 is surely your best bet as this has the additional
BCI-3 hi-capacity cartridge.
The i560 is around £111.0 and the i865 £116 and an Epson C84 around £93.0.
On printing costs the Epson was the cheapest with Canon nearby.
It may be worth your while checking out the PC-Pro site which may be back up
again.

Tony could be persuaded to give you a personal demonstration!

Well, if Tony could be persuaded to tell me if the four carts of the
Epson C64 can easily be refilled with a good quality waterproof ink that
is CHEAP, then maybe . . .
