Recommend a book on XP Pro

I switched to XP Pro when I got my new computer recently on the
recommendation of just about everyone I spoke with, everyone with any
computer savvy, that is.

I'm pretty comfortable using my computer but have no idea how
everything works. I've been using computers for about ten years, am
comfortable with M$ Office products (Excel, Word, Access), and picked
up bits and pieces here and there.

I'd like to buy a book, one I can take anywhere (as opposed to
harvesting the information from online) and want some recommendations,
something that will introduce basic Windows procedures to someone like
myself. I want theory, if at all possible, so instead of getting a
list of procedures, I can understand how the system works. I'd like
to someday know how to get around with the security settings, ports,
etc.

Does such a book exist for WinXP Pro?

Thanks.

Mastering Windows XP Professional by Mark Minasi.

I do recommend you read reviews of it and any other books that are suggested
to see if you think it will suit you, rather than going on my opinion. I
like Minasi's books myself though and I believe this would be a good one to
start with.

Hi

One of the XP books that I recommend is 'Windows XP Inside Out'. It will give you the basics of using XP and upwards to a level that you will be able to customise XP:

Authors - Ed Bott & Carl Siechert
ISBN 0-7356-1382-6

It's only got 1200+ pages and includes a reasonably good CD.

Another good book for Pro users is 'Microsoft Windows XP Professional Resource Kit Documentation'

ISBN 0-7256-1485-7

Slightly larger at 1700 pages, but is better to throw at the local cats having their fun at 3am <BG>. This tome also comes with a CD which has an ebook version on it, which is very useful.

Go to Amazon.com and search for the "Inside Out" series. There is one on
just about every aspect of XP (ie: Windows XP Inside Out, etc.). The cool
thing about this series is that they come with a CD that contains the entire
book in eBook format so that you can install the book on your PC in a
searchable format.

Go to http://www.sybex.com they've got lots of books on XP....also try
Amazon.com

My local Borders has a ton of books, too...I was looking for some
specific suggestions (which I got, thank!) so I don't waste my money
on an expensive book that misses the target.

I sure hope I didn't make a mistake, going to the Professional
version. I'm really curious about computers, hang out in the GRC
newsgroups a lot, even though I don't understand much of what I read.

Being ignorant shouldn't stop me from using Pro, huh? LOL.

It's funny...when I started working on comptuers (for a job) ten years
ago, I resisted, not wanting to get caught up in all the technology.
My interests are 'soft,' more in the arts. But now, I really enjoy
using my computer and do so often. My life and work are intricately
keyed into it's inclusion in what I do.

I'm looking forward to learning, though I need to find an easy entry
point. I'll take this short list to the bookstore and see what looks
good among these choices.

Thanks
