I have a HP system (out of warranty) that I have to reinstall XP> I have the
HP Recovery disks, however, suddenly the system does not recognize either
the CD-ROM or the DVD drive. HP said the IDE controller was probably bad.
If this is so since the HD is on the same cable as the CD-ROM and DVD drive
would that impact the hard drive also?

If I start the system with a Win98SE startup disk it tries to load the
driver for the CD-ROM but says the device does not exist.

The system has no operating system installed on it at present.

Any ideas would be appreciated.

Is the BIOS set to look for a CD book disk before looking for the hard
drive?

In the BIOS the bootable order should read: FDD, CD, HDD (ie floppy, CD,
hard drive.

If the IDE controller is bad, that's actually on the motherboard itself...
it's the (usually) blue socket that the ribbon cable connects to.

If you have a CDRW drive AND a separate DVD drive AND a harddrive, they
physically CANNOT all be on the same IDE controller.... there is a limit of
two drives per cable.

Are the drives - yes, all of them) identified correctly in the BIOS? If the
BIOS doesn't see the drives, there is no hope of Windows ever seeing them!
