Recieved messages do not appear in the inbox

I have found that many emails (not all) that I recieve do not show up in my
in box, although if I do a mail search of the inbox the message appears
there. From the search box I can open teh email. What would cause this?

Is 'View|Current View' set to "Show All Messages"? The other View settings
selectively hide messages from view.
