What on earth is the purpose of the "Recent" folder on Documents &
Settings -> etc.? All I can see is a waste of space. I've deleted it,
but it comes back.

It's a folder which contains shortcuts to documents you have opened.
The most recent can usually be seen in a list within the Start Menu.

Well my "Recent Documents" file takes up THIRTY SEVEN KB! If that's what you
consider a "waste of space" then I suggest you go back to Windows 3.1 on
floppy disks A and B and 640k memory...

Apparently you are saying space is plentiful. I agree.

I have space in my living room for a skunk, but I don't have one.

Are you for real ? It is so small and also it is a Default folder which is needed by Windows to be there and that is the reason why it always comes back. Gordon is quite correct with his answer

Because I don't want a skunk on my computer? You bet.

If you are REALLY so DESPERATELY worried about 37 KB then it's either time
for a new HDD (they DO come bigger than 10GB these days) or return your
machine to where you bought it and swap it for an Etch-a-Sketch...

I already said it isn't about space. But apparently you want it to be
about space. Well, pin a rose on you.

It's the smell of the skunk I don't want. Or, if you prefer, I don't like
dirty diapers of ANY size laying around. I can't be alone in this, given
the number of utilities available for deleting redundant, telltale tracks
of all kinds, including those in RECENT. If I were married and had an
email affair going RECENT could be deadly. Likewise with any number of
business or military operations. If you want it that doesn't (shouldn't)
mean I have to. It shouldn't be crammed down anyone's throat.

Check this link. Watch for line wrap on the URL

It doesn't get rid of it but it empties it when you log out.

Jim, what a deliciously great quote!
Thank you for my laugh of the day (the best of this week actually).
