Frustrated

After installing the XP automatic updates this morning my
NVIDEO driver was clobbered.

The system comes up but you cant read a thing on the
screen. You can't shut it off either. You have to power
it off.

After several attempts to get the system to come up
normally I finally had to bring it up in safe mode and
reinstall the driver. However, "NVMCTRAY.DLL" was not
found. I had to restore XP.

My question??????

Is there anything important in the lastest upgrades? I'm
reluctant to try to install it again.

Thanks

You should install ALL Critical Updates.
Did you reinstall the video drivers before you restored to see if that
is all that was needed?
Reboot the computer
Disable all unnecessary applications including anti virus, download
accelerators etc.
Install updates
Reboot
Install latest Windows XP video drivers if necessary.

If the upgrade in question was a driver update, then in the future,
decline all driver updates. Accept only security and OS updates.

Very poor advice. You can install the updates manually, one at a time and
have the possibility of restoring to a prior date etc. But to make a statement
to not update drivers is insane.

To be fair, I believe Quaoar was referring to the driver updates offered by
Windows Update.

While there is nothing wrong with installing driver updates from Windows
Update, many users prefer to update their device drivers directly from the
manufacturers' web sites. The manufacturer's web site likely has more recent
versions of their drivers as well as more extensive support for them.

The drivers from Windows Update have been certified by Microsoft to work
with Windows XP. Manufacturers' drivers will work with XP too, but they may
not have gone through Microsoft's extensive (and expensive) certification
process.

Thanks for all of the information.

It appears that there were 3 updates in the auto update.
2 security and 1 driver update.

I have since restored XP to a prior version. Reinstalled
the security updates.

I am currently re-downloading the driver update. I'm a
little skeptical about installing the one from Microsoft
and getting one directly from NVIDIA.

But since I installed the security updates separately I
now know how to back out the device driver if it clobbers
the Monitor again.

If it does then I will get all future driver updates
directly from the manufacturer.

Thanks
