I have a Linksys Wireless Access Point Router, and
recently there was a WinXP automatic update that I
installed. Suddenly, my laptop (on which I installed the
update as well) no longer would connect to my router, and
my desktop was occasioanally up and down.

A friend of mine, who is very knowledgeable about
networks and WinXP, was able to "roll back" my drivers to
the ones originally installed. However, sometimes I still
have situations where I lose my connection (I have hi-
speed) if I have not used it for about five minutes. This
was never a problem before the update.

Has anyone else experienced this problem? If so, is there
a solution yet to this problem?

Thanks.

I have the same router, and it sounds like your problem
is:
- You open a browser and can browse the internet fine
- You let it sit for 5 minutes and then have to wait
while the router reconnects your internet

It is likely that when your drivers were rolled back,
settings on your router were reset.

To fix this, open Internet Explorer and
type "192.168.1.1" [no quotes] in the address bar and
press enter. A screen will appear prompting you for a
password (DO NOT FILL IN A USERNAME). The default
password is "admin" [again, no quotes], but you may /
should have changed this. After you have entered the
right password press "OK".

This will open the Router web browser configuration
interface. Near the bottom of this page should be an area
labeled in the left column as "WAN Connection Type:".
There should be a drop down menu that shows your
connection type.

Unless your connection uses a static IP, there should be
two radio buttons, one labeled "Connect on Demand: Maz
Idle Time [5] Min." and the other, "Keep Alive: Redial
Period [20] Sec.". To keep your connection on all the
time, select the second radio. To increase the ammount of
time before the router disconnects your internet
connection, type the time (in minutes in the "Max Idle
Time" box, and ensure that the radio button is selected.

NOTE: These instructions are known to work with the
LinkSys Wireless Access Point Router V.2 (BEFW11S4). If
these do not work seek help at the LinkSys website
[http://www.linksys.com].

Good luck!
