Recent Update

Hi there,

Today I left my computer on and when I got back it had rebooted. When I
logged back in it said it had recently received an update which required an
automatic restart. Any ideas what this update was?

I received some updates the other day but have restarted since then.

You can review your update history by visiting the Windows
Update web site and clicking on "View Installation History"
located in the left pane.

Well I checked the log and it was windows installer 3.1 although it
was also installed on 13 April. Is this the exact same install?

Same thing happened to me. What's up with MS making the decision to
reboot my computer? I had a Virtual Machine running server processes
and of course, that VM had its virtual power button switched off. This
is very very very bad.

Just because I have Windows update setup to auto-install the updates...
it should NEVER reboot without my permission! Have it sit there
forever with a dialog box *ASKING FOR PERMISSION TO SHUT REBOOT* and
leave it there until I come along and allow or deny it.

This happened about 6 months to a year ago too. Since I'm the computer
guru in the family, I had 3 people contact me in one day saying that
their computers just rebooted for no reason. My sister was in the
middle of working on the computer and lost her work. She had no
indication that anything was going on.

MS really needs to fix this. Data is being lost, important processes
are being interrupted... bad things are happenning.

Some updates require a restart to install. You can change automatic update
preference to "download but let me choose when to install" in the security
center.

It still seems a bit wrong of Microsoft to automatically restart the
computer. I had actually left my computer video rendering which takes
around 5 hours to complete. When I got back my pc was back at the logon
screen and no further on with video rendering.

I agree that some updates do require restarts to complete the install but
this should not be instant. There should be the usual do you want to
restart your computer now or would you wish to do this manually later box.

I have my computer to receives and install all updates as that just seems
easier.

I think I may now have to change it to download but notify me before
installing them.

Reboots should NEVER be done automatically!!! Sure, I can change it to
not install automatically (which I've already done), but I never, in a
million years, would have expected auto-install scripts to freakin'
reboot my machine! That is very wrong and very dangerous. It can cost
LOTS of money. They ABSOLUTELY MUST inform you that when you choose
auto-install that it will also auto-reboot! OR they just just have it
sit there forever with a dialog box *ASKING FOR PERMISSION TO REBOOT*
and
leave it there until I come along and allow or deny it.

IT SHOULD NEVER REBOOT AUTOMATICALLY!
 
None of our computers reboot automatically.
