Recent update messed up my DHCP/IP assignment?

Last night when I was shutting down WinXP, it asked me if I wanted to apply 4
updates during shutdown. That was a new one on me, as I have never had my
options set that way before, but ok, I clicked yes, it applied the 4 updates,
and off to bed I go. In the morning, I boot up, log in, read my Email, etc.
and everything is fine for the first 20-30 minutes or so. Then, I get a
popup window I have never seen before stating that I have "limited
connectivity" and asking me if I want to repair the connection. I say no,
since it was working just fine right up until the window popped. My
connection is now disabled. I have a broken connection icon in my tray now
so I open it and go back the window and click Repair. Hangs a while then
times out and tells me it cannot assign an IP. I go to check my DHCP
settings etc. in the network connections control panel, which brings up
panels I have never seen before this morning (the "Repair" panel was a new
one for me, too). All the settings are fine, though.

My wife's PC on the same LAN, identical hardware and settings (using DHCP,
so a problem of dup IPs ;)...), is working just fine. I restart...no
connection. I shutdown and start up again, no connection. I have to leave
for work, but my PC is incommunicado. I look up the most recent (July 11th)
update on this site once I get to work, and I see security updates to DHCP.
I suppose it is technically possible that my LAN card crapped out on me, but
that would be a mighty big coincidence...does anyone know of other people
having problems with assigning an IP with DHCP since this update?
