Recent Programs missing from start menu

I found a solution elsewhere
Right click the taskbar. Select properties. Select the Start menu Tab. Tick
the "Store and display a list of recently opened programs. If you now click
"customise", towrds the bottom you can select how many files you wish to show.

Some how the number of files had gotten set to zero.
