I have a Dell Inspiron 8100 notebook with XP Home
Edition. I have dutifully updated when the automatic
notification happens, but after the most recent one my
computer was virtually inoperable. In Word, Outlook
Express, or anything else I tried to run I'd get a little
blue screen that began with a warning along the lines
of "Windows is going to shut down your computer to avoid
damaging it." This happened about 20 times in 90 minutes
and I managed to see enough of the message to note
something like "If you have installed any new
software. . . ." I recalled I had, an update from
Microsoft, so I though a "System restore" to an earlier
date would do it. Nope. Blue screen again. I did manage
to get to Control Panel, Add/Remove Programs, and found a
Windows XP Hotfix that seemed to be the most recent date
(If I read the numbers correctly -- it started 2020703, I
think). I removed it, and reset the computer to the
settings of July 15, and now all is well. Now my computer
is telling me that an upgrade is available, but I am
spooked! Anyone else have anything like this?

I had the same issue after updating and on the same day
as you did for I also had to restore to July 15. In my
case however(which is still going on to some degree in
Outlook 2002) the update that is "buggy" is Security
Update 821557, I attempted to look up the update number
you posted but could not find it, so you might go into
control panel>add remove programs and see if you have a
update with the above number and see if that is there. If
you an average home user not running your own server even
Microsoft admits that that update has know issues and
also by their own admission not every update that is sent
to your computer needs to be installed for some of them
can cause more trouble than protection.
Hope this helps
