For some reason my recent file list does not always add a recent file to the
list. Anyone else have this problem?

They only get added to the list (MRU) if they have been opened, edited and
saved. If you just read the document and close it without saving anything,
it won't be listed.

Although that is true of the Documents list on the Windows Start menu, it is
emphatically *not* true of the MRU lists on the File menu in Office apps
such as Word and Excel.

In fact these are edited and saved messages - that is what is puzzling about
them showing up - sometimes they do and sometimes they don't.

I must look at this on my work computer and I am sure it doesn't happen
there. If it is always suppose to appear on the list, I'll investigate why
it isn't as I thought this was normal!

Have no idea what you mean by MRU,
If you just read the document and close it without saving anything,
it won't be listed.

Hmmm. I tested that theory and it doesn't work that way on
my computer. Everything I view only and close is listed in
the drop down list.

For the OP: I have a shortcut on my desktop to
"C:\WINDOWS\Application Data\Microsoft\Office\Recent"
The list is not by last date viewed, however.

I've checked on my Work computer and sure enough, they don't always get
added to the MRU (and the same with Excel SS too). I had assumed that this
was as I suggested previously in that the documents were not edited, only
viewed. But further experiments prove that this is not the case and it is
more random than I thought. I haven't had time to probe this any further but
I certainly will.
