Receiving messages on startup

Mad Max

Greetings All .

Am receiving messages on startup that are different for each of three users.
To make it simple I'll start with one and see how we do. As follows---

" WSAEADDRINUSE
Listen on port(),blind()failed."

Whether it has any bearing or not, I did a chkdsk for the first time today,
after finally locating it. The pop up style message occurred immediately
after finishing.
System---Windows XPhomeSP1
All critical updates are in place. Use Zone Alarm, Ad-Aware, AVG 6.0 and
Linskys hard wired router. Within the past few days have ran a full system
scan from Panda,Sygate & Symantic, after receiving a notification from AVG
that I had a Home Page Hijacker . After running all these and finding
nothing , I located it and deleted it . Don't recall exactly where it was.
After messing with it for so long my thoughts are not quite clear. System
seems to be running perfectly , other than for the pop up style message on
startup. It is more of an annoyance than a problem.

To make it simple I'll start with one and see how we do. As follows---

" WSAEADDRINUSE
Listen on port(),blind()failed."

A process was not able to initiate because the network resource it uses
wasn't available yet. What process? No idea.

Suggestions:
--Event Viewer should have a corresponding record of this error and it
might mention the name of the process.

--May want to try a run of defrag. This can help system performance and
will optimize file placement including startup files.

--If due to a startup program, you could try some startup troubleshooting
using MSCONFIG in an effort to pinpoint which startup item the message is
originating from. URLs to articles about how to use MSCONFIG for this
purpose:

Mad Max, this error usually means an application has attempted to create a
listening socket (likely the now deleted hijack application) and specified
an address that is in use or if the socket is already listening for a
connection. My guess is, the deleted application created a setting for this
purpose and even though the app is gone, the setting has remained.

I don't know where the setting might be but I'd assume the change was to a
default system setting as it won't release or reset. It's difficult to say
what might be left over even though you deleted the application and I
wouldn't advise rummaging around in the registry to try to find a reference
as deleting it might cause other issues.

Assuming you have an actual XP CD as opposed to a recovery CD, try a Repair
install as follows:
NOTE, while a repair install should leave your data files intact, if
something goes wrong during the repair install, you may be forced to start
over and do a clean install of XP. If you don't have your data backed up,
you would lose your data should that eventuality occur.

Boot from the CD. If your system is set to be able to boot from the CD, it
should detect the disk and give a brief message, during the boot up, if you
wish to boot from the CD press any key.

Once you have pressed a key, setup should begin. You will see a reference
asking if you need to load special drivers and another notice that if you
wish to begin the ASR (Automatic Recovery Console) depress F2. Just let
setup run past all of that. It will continue to load files and drivers.

Then it will bring you to a screen. Eventually, you will come to a screen
with the option to (1) setup Windows or (2) Repair Windows Installation
using the Recovery console.

The first option, to setup Windows is the one you want and requires you to
press enter. When asked, press F8 to accept the end user agreement. Setup
will then search for previous versions of Windows. Upon finding your
version, it will ask if you wish to Repair your current installation or
install fresh. Press R, that will run a repair installation. From there
on, follow the screens.

If you only have a recovery CD, your options are quite limited. You can
either purchase a retail version of XP will allow you to perform the above
among other tools and options it has or you can run your system recovery
routine with the Recovery CD which will likely wipe your drive, deleting all
files but will restore your setup to factory fresh condition.

Thanks again for your reply. This is more of an annoyance than a problem.
Thank you for taking time to address the issue. Your suggestions are always
welcome and helpful. Looks like I need to spend some time researching these
annoyances and hopefully find a solution, without going to all the trouble
of doing an install. That would be like hitting a fly with a sledgehammer. A
bit of overkill. Also , since I've never done one --------No guts , no
glory.
Think I'll follow your suggestions , to the letter, before doing anything so
drastic. It's what you don't know that gets you.
No need to reply, since I'm going to be away for an extended period and
would probably miss any replies.
Again, thank you so much.

Michael, thank you for your reply.
I fear you are absolutely correct in your assessment of this problem.
Regrettably I have an OEM computer with a recovery disc. Never Again! Too
bad I did not know the additional problems with OEM , or even that a Retail
version was available, when this was purchased. In hindsight I would
probably still have purchased the OEM, to save a few bucks at that time . If
I recall correctly I had just come from spending a few hundred for auto
repair that morning and then my two year old computer imploded.
Anyway, I appreciate you taking the time to reply and offer such helpful
answers, which I'll use in attempting to free myself of this minor
annoyance.
No need to reply, since I'll be out of pocket for some time and would
probably miss it. You gave me much information that will take me some time
to figure out just what I want/need to do.

Thanks jazz. Done & Done !
Also found a Trojan Horse nested in my System Restore & deleted that bugger.
Seems like the net is being overrun with nasties, even more than ever. Can't
seem to turn around without being infected , no matter where we go . I'm
doing everything I know and the bugs are still getting in. Fortunately there
are sites like this to go to when things get hairy.
