I have recently activated the fax service in my Windows
XP. I am having no problem with sending faxes, but I
CANNOT receive faxes. I HAVE enabled 'receive faxes.'
The phone rings and is answered. The machine begins
receiving, and THEN: there is an interrupt. On the
sender's end, there is a message the the sending
machine 'cannot recognize handshake signal for the next
page at the receiver side.' What can I do about this? I
have read all the Microsoft KB articles that I can
locate, but none addresses this issue.

Is you modem a Microsoft certified modem? You can find the list of Microsoft
Certified modems at :-
http://www.microsoft.com/windows/ca...ryl2&pgn=01a642fd-2790-420f-90bd-85df6a377206

If it a certified modem you will need to enable PSS and debug logging of the
transmissions to see what the problem is. Are you comfortable editing the
registry?

I have exactly the same problem as Earl: New installation of Windows FAX,
can send fax ok, receive fax is enabled, receiving fax answers ok but then
will not receive fax. Have not been able to find any help in kb or anywhere
else.

I forgot to include that my modem, a Sportster fax-modem, is listed in the
MS compatible hardware list. kirk

I tried another modem with a PCI interface (Lucent Winmodem) and was able to
both send and receive. I suppose the problem was some incompatibility
among the modem, the drivers, the motherboard, and the operating system (XP
Pro). The first modem had an ISA interface and had worked perfectly for
years under dial-up.
