I am using FrontPage 2000 on Windows XP (SP2 and all the other recent
security updates). As recently as 6 weeks ago I was able to create and
access site on my local computer. I currently have the default IIS and
FrontPage 2000 Server Extensions installed. FrontPage 2000 has been
updated to SP3. When I try to publish locally, open a local web or
creat a new local web I receive an error. When I check the event log
the error "Received empty response from Microsoft FrontPage Server
Extensions" is reported.

I have searched for this error and found several other reports from
other. However, none of the ohter solutions work for my issue. I have
tried verifying that there are no unknown accounts (i.e. "S-...")
listed for the inetpub subdirectories in the Security tab.
Additionally I have verified that the groups that have access to the
folders don't have unknown accounts as members.

What else can I check?

thanks,
Michael Wohlstadter

Try running a check and fix on the extensions. If that doesn't work,
consider upgrading to the FP 2002 extensions.

Tried the check and fix. Also tried FPSE 2002, but then I get the
error "Server error: Error 5 opening registry key
"SOFTWARE\Classes\.acg".

thanks

Still having this issue. Is there a switch for enhanced logging?
Besides the Event Monitor, is there a log file for FrontPage Server
Extensions?

Someone, anyone???

Seems like the other threads for this error that I've found on the net
end the same way; no solution. Is this a known problem with FP2000 and
Windows XP SP2? Will an upgrade to FP2003 resolve the issue?

I assume (not a good thing) this is the server on your computer?
Have you tried turning off your (windows) firewall (while not connected to
the internet) to see if the problem is there?
If that starts it working then make an exception (for FrontPage) in the
firewall settings.

Just a thought

No change with Firewall turned off. Oh well, I'm going to try to
convince the client to use a different web development software. I
didn't really want to use FrontPage anyway...

thanks for responding,
Michael

If you can't get the tool to work.....
Throw it away!
