Ouch.
Here are the exact steps I am going through to compose my email:
1. I click the NEW button in Outlook and fill in the address and
subject.
2. I type some text and click on the ATTACH button to attach a Word
document.
3. I hit SEND, and Outlook just freezes. Nothing happens.
4. Once this happens, I can then no longer use IE, because that
freezes up, and when I go to shut down my computer, or to restart it,
some ESCAN message comes up, and I click on SHUT DOWN so that I can
reboot my computer.
When the little yellow triangle in the lower right-hand corner
appears, I click on that and read the error message, which is: The
operation timed out waiting for a response from the SMTP server. If
you continue to receive this message, contact your server
administrator or ISP.
I have done this and thus far they cannot explain why it is that I
can receive attachments (i.e. Word docs), but I cannot send them.
They claim that everything is A-OK on their end, which I guess is a
standard response.
I am not doing anything that I have not done before this problem
started a few days ago. The files that I am attaching are no
different than what I was sending before. If my messages are just
standard composed text, then there is no problem. This is as
specific as I can get.
"Clicking on New" doesn't tell me if you are using the embedded Outlook
compose editor or if you are using Word. However, my guess is that you
are using the embedded compose editor in Outlook and not using Word.
ESCAN. Well, my guess is that you have anti-virus software that scans
your e-mails. It is also scanning your outbound e-mails. So how big
are these .doc files you are attaching? Really huge files take awhile
to scan but then e-mail shouldn't be used for file transfer, anyway, of
huge files. Have you tried disabling e-mail scanning by your anti-virus
software?
Could be your ISP has quota limits on how large an e-mail can be and the
session gets locked up rather than your mail server responding with
an -ERR status.
Could be you have some extension installed in Outlook that causes the
problem? Look under tools -> options -> other -> advanced to see that
add-ons or plug-ins are installed in Outlook. Try starting Outlook in
safe mode ("outlook.exe /safe") which does not load any extensions when
Outlook starts.
