Can anyone recommend a good, concise Active Directory tutorial and
overview for someone just starting out with Microsoft server
technologies? Thx.
I'm not trying to biased because I am a trainer, but honeslty if you can sit
the 2279 AD course, which is a five-day instructor led course with hands-on
labs, you will know enough on how to setup a domain, workstations, GPOs,
back up AD and restore it, etc.
There are numerous books out there too, such as:
O'Reilly's Active Directory by Joe Richards (a Microsoft MVP), Robbie Allen,
and Alistair G. Lowe-Norris

Windows Server 2003 Active Directory Design and Implementation: A Unique,
Scenario-Based Approach to Selecting and Implementing the Best Active
Directory Design for Your Environment, by John Savill (I actually was a
technical contributor/editor for John's book):

There are numerous others as well, that others may post for you too. They
are all good, and all have their own styles, but they are all accurate.
Probably the best bet is to attend a class to get the FULL understanding of
exactly what AD does first hand from a qualified instructor, along with teh
hands-on labs where you take apart and put it back together again, and then
purchase these books as a deeper, more concise guide..
Info on the 2279 AD course:
2279: Planning, Implementing, and Maintaining a Microsoft® Windows ServerT
2003 Active Directory® Infrastructure
Summary: In this five-day instructor-led course students will learn the job
skills necessary to plan, implement and troubleshoot the key components of a
Microsoft Windows Server 2003 directory service environment.

I hope that helps.
