I have an existing domain with 2 servers running 2k server (AD), and 20+
clients all running 2k pro or xp pro. for various reasons i will be
completely rebuilding the domain on new servers from scratch. this means
there will be no full backups to restore. backups will be limited only to
files that will be copied to the new servers. im also running exchange 2000
on one of the servers and this will also be recreated from scratch. all
users use .pst files so there will be no complications with having to
migrate mailboxes etc...

my question is this: what happens when a domain member attempts to log on to
a domain where the domain has been completely rebuilt? in other words, lets
say that right now my domain is mydomain.com. i log off and while im logged
off a completely new server is brought on line. of course the domain name
will be the same and my account will have been created in AD. will this
work? or will there be some kind of complicated SID, GUID problems
somewhere? and if there are, whats the best way to go? remove the clients
from the domain and temporarily put them in a workgroup, then join them to
the new domain? and if THATS the case, will users' desktop setting remain in
tact being that the domain and user account will have the same names as the
previous installation?

You will have to rejoin all clients. They will get a new profile. After that
login as administrator and copy all files from the old profile to the new
profile. That way the users will have all their original settings.
