Rebuild DC without demoting first

A friend of mine works for a company that had two domain controllers in their domain (DC1 & DC2). He experienced a severe hardware issue with DC2. He rebuilt DC2 but didn't attempt to demote it first. Now he has a rebuilt DC2 server but doesn't want to cause a conflict in Active Directory by promoting it. What should he do?

Thanks in advance for any assistance.

No need to do anything except make the rebuilt server a DC. Everything
should sync just fine. Adding DCs to a domain isn't a problem nor would
cause one.

Really... I assumed there would be a conflict. Can he use the same server
name, i.e. DC2?

Yes, if that DC2 is gone; no if it is still around.

My experience is that this will in some sense take
over the "old account" but your mileage may vary.

If you don't use the same name (or it doesn't work out)
then you will need to (eventually) remove the 'dead'
or 'abandoned' DC-object from the AD.

Use NTDSUtil "Metadata cleanup" to do that.

Thanks for the assist. I researched further while waiting on feedback. I'm having him follow the steps outlined in http://http://technet2.microsoft.co...2f44ad0e-f84d-47a2-956b-df3f8554ea541033.mspx. So far it's been relatively simple.

Thanks again.

You should do a metadata cleanup first and let that replicate around. Once that
is completed, promote it.
