I'm currently running XP on a Dell Dimension 4300. My computer has SO much garbage and everything on it that I just wanna reboot the entire system, get rid of everything, and just re-install XP. I've tried system restores but they don't work. This computer hardly works now and I've had it professionally re-booted and it cost me about $50. How do I do it myself? Please reply with any suggestions!!!!!

I'll re-boot it for you for $5.00. Actually I think you
mean to say you wanted to re-INITIALIZE Windows XP with a
clean install didn't you?

Reboot means restart, as in start> shutown> restart.
To do a clean re-install, reboot from the XP CD (you will probably have to
set the BIOS to boot from CD), and select the options (I can't recall
offhand, but i think it is L) to delete your current partition and
repartition. Youu will then have to enable the firewall, then connect to the
internet and download the updates.

As long as you are re-installing XP you might consider
changing your partition(s) setup:
http://aumha.org/a/parts.htm

Be sure you are disconnected from the Internet when you do
the re-install.

Once the re-install is complete activate the firewall that
comes with XP (run Help and Support and search
for 'firewall') and install your anti-virus program (I'm
assuming you have the install disk for that).

Once the firewall is activated re-connect to the Internet
and download all applicable updates from Microsoft.
http://v4.windowsupdate.microsoft.com/en/default.asp

Then download and install the Zone Alarm firewall and turn
off the XP firewall.
http://www.uant.net/firewall/zonealarmguide.html

Then get Ad-Aware and Spybot and SpywareBlaster. They can
be found via Google. Update and use weekly.

Then go to
http://www.grc.com/default.htm

and download and use these three utilities:
UnPlug n' Pray
DCOMbobulator
Shoot the Messenger

You now have a reasonably secure system. At the Gibson
Research Site
http://www.grc.com/default.htm
on the main page you will find ShieldsUp! - which you can
use to test the security setup of your computer - as I
recall there are 6 or 7 tests.

A browser test site:

Turn off unneeded start-up programs:

Block unwanted crap with a hosts file:

Hope something here helps
