Reboot, Reboot, Reboot

Dell, w2k, all updates.
This machine has worked flawlessly for over 2 years. It has had no new
installations for months. It has Mcafee online virus protection. About twice
a week we are notified to update the virus dat. files. This morning when we
went to update the virus protection the monitor went black. Now every time
we try to reboot the process gets as far as the logon screen then it goes
black and continuously repeats the process. In Save Mode it won't let us run
chkdsk. Any suggestions would be appreciated. Thank you.

I have done exactly that, but it didn't help. I even removed all references
to Mcafee in the registry. Thanks for your reply.

The looping problem often occurs when hard disks are
changed. Before you change disks, delete any inappropriate
or non-existing devices in the registry. Doing this has no ill
effect - it simply forces Windows to reset its device register.

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE/SYSTEM/MountedDevices/
Delete all keys which look like "\DosDevice\<DRIVE_LETTER>:"

I would also check the location of the paging file:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\
Session Manager\Memory Management
