Hi All,

I'm using Windows XP Pro edition with SP2. I use my notebook in both
wired and wireless modes. For sometime now, my machine forces me to
restart it whenever I make any changes in the network adaptor TCP/IP
settings. i.e. any changes in IP, subnetmask, gateway or dns require me
to restart the machine. The exact message that I get is:

"You must shut down and restart your computer before the new settings
will take effect.
Do you want to restart your computer now?" with "Yes" and "No" buttons.

Since WinXP doesnt require the machine to be rebooted for these kind of
changes, this problem is annonying.
This problem is there in all network adaptors i.e. Local LAN adaptor,
wireless lan adaptor etc.

Any directions to solve this will be greatly appreciated.

Cheers!

I'm sorry, but I don't know why it's telling you to restart the
computer.

If you click "No", the new settings might take effect without
restarting, in spite of the message. I'd try that.

Just for curiosity, why are you changing those settings? Do you move
the computer between different locations with different network
settings? If so, you might be able to use the "netsh" command to make
the changes without a prompt to restart the computer.

At last... PROBLEM SOLVED!!!

It was to annoying to pop up this message every time I was changing the DNS parameters in my TCP/IP Settings.

Here is the solution:

1. Download a file called: winsockfix.exe (Google for it)

2. Write your TCP/IP Settings down to a piece of paper (they will be erased)

3. Run the file you have download in the first step, and click the FIX button (All TCP/IP settings will be erased)

4. Reboot

5. After reboot, apply the previous TCP/IP Settings (those you wrote down in step 2)

6. DONE!!! (No more annoying pop-ups that asks for reboots)

:)
