Reboot Error

Dave

I downloaded and installed Norton Internet Security 2004 and ran live
update. Upon completion, a box opens that says to reboot to finish the
update.
Upon reboot, I got an error message that reads:
The instruction at "0x0040a2bc" referenced memory at
"0x00000000". The memory could not be "read".
Click ok to terminate the program.
At the time when that error message popped up, my computer also froze. I
could not move the mouse or curser to click ok and close anything.
Can someone tell me where I can find out what that means and what I need to
do to fix it.
Thanks
Dave

Hi Dave,

It sounds to me like Norton Internet Security got corrupted during its
update, and now is causing a system level error that is causing your
computer to stop responding when the application initializes.

I would recommend you try a system restore and see if you can get to a state
that your computer worked from.
Here's how:

Reboot your computer into Safe Mode (not Safe Mode with Networking)
After you log in, click Start, Help and Support
Under the section called "Pick a Task", select System Restore
When System Restore opens, select "Restore my computer to an earlier time",
and click <Next>
You will then see a calendar. Every date that's in bold letters is a time
your system set a restore point.
Select the restore point that is closest to the point before your Live
Update from Norton (chance are Norton sets a restore point anyway, so use
the most recent one), and click Next
On the next page you will be warned that you are restoring you system, and
that this action cannot be undone once you launch it Since the goal is to
recover your system to a stable state, go ahead and click Next and let
System Restore work its magic.

Windows will reboot to your previous settings and state, and with luck, you
will not experience the system error.

If the probem persists, I would definately contact Symantec tech support and
see what they recommend to fix this issue. Explain everything you detailed
here. They should have a solution for you to back out the live update, or
walk you through re-installing Norton Internet Security, and its udpates.

Hope that helps!
