Reboot and Select Proper Boot Device solved problem

I have a system running an asrock SATA dual mb with an Athlon 64
processor and two hard drives, western digital SATA 80 gig models. I
have XP on one and Vista RC1 on the other. I recently replaced the
AGP card with a PCI Expressnvidia 7300GT from New Egg.

Since installing the card I began to get the message "Reboot and
Select Proper Boot Device or Insert Proper Boot Media" on a cold boot.
When I do the three finger salute I get the normal boot screen
allowing me to selec which OS to use.

I checked the BIOS to make sure the HD was my primary boot device.
I checked the DVD drive and made sure there was no media in the drive.

At this point I'm thinking the drive or perhaps the power supply. The
Vantec Ion 400 Watt has always been enough but I have gradually
upgraded. It was then I noticed both hard drives using the same power
line. On a whim, I swapped connectors.

Problem solved. At least for now.

Is it likely that this was the source of the problem, that my new
video card draws just enough additional power that it delays the drive
spin up just enough to get that message?

Are you using the molex power connectors or the sata power connectors ?

You can see the molex power connector metal tunnels
open up over time and not make very reliable contact.

Maybe, check the drive spinup times in the SMART stats using Everest.

yes spin up, could be causing it, but why would the video card change
that? Perhaps video init time is shorter with the new card..

Some MB's also have a delay for this very problem, settable through
the bios specifies the amount of time to wait (in seconds) for the
HD's to spin up before commencing auto-detection and ultimately boot

Maybe your board has it
