I went to cable company broadband(no routers used) a month
ago for my home office IBM T30 laptop and have
constant "line disruptions" in my location (rural) causing
my broadband connex to drop 4-6 times/day. Nothing can be
done by my company's help desk or the cable company (who
has investigated this from EVERY possible aspect) to stop
the disconnects.

However both my company help desk and the cable company
have said that going to the DOS screen and inputing
IPCONFIG/release and IPCONFIG/renew should reestablish my
connection and the DOS screen always gives a positive
response to this. BUT the broadband connex won't come
back with that process and the only way to get it back is
to totally reboot. Both my company and the cable company
contend this is a Windows 2000 problem and has to do w/
some WIN setting that does not recognize the new IP
settings.

Is there ANYTHING I can change in my WIN2000
(Professional) settings that will let the ipconfig/release-
renew process work properly w/out having to reboot
everytime? I don't want to cancel the broadband as my
choices are limited in my rural area but I may have to
because rebooting 5-6 times/day is really disruptive to my
work.
Thanks.

Try stopping and starting the Workstation Service (through the Control
Panel, I believe. I don't have a W2K machine to try it out on).

Don't be afraid of stopping and starting services - a reboot will get
you out of any problems. Just don't *disable* anything. Just stop and
start them.

Have you thought of putting surge protection on the supply to the
laptop and the cable modem? Also have you any firewall software on the
lappie? You'll need it!

Cheers,

Cliff

And this sure doesn't jibe with any Win2000 behavior
I know -- sounds like the cable company and help
desk are just avoiding solving your real problem.

Ipconfig /renew (you don't even need the release) just
works.
