Question 1:

I'd like to re-assign the location that Windows XP Pro saves hiberfil.sys to
a USB 2.0 flash drive. Is there a setting or registry hack that will allow
me to do this?

Question 2:

Assuming Question 1 is possible, how would I limit the memory usage on my
system to the size that would fit on my flash drive? Or, assuming I have
1gb memory, how much room would I need on a flash drive to allow room for
the compressed contents of hiberfil.sys?

The only reason I can think to put the hibernation file on a removeable
drive is to take it to another computer. That just seems like such a bad
idea. And I can't imagine burning up a flash drive to save hibernation
state. I use the flash drive for passwords and portable apps. Even that
can be dangerous when you are using hibernation.

The flash drive will be mounted inside the computer case, so there is no
possibility that the machine would boot up and not find the file ready for
it to use. The reason I want write the hibernation file to the flash drive
is to shorten the time it takes to wake up the system following hibernation.
I concede that it may not be worth the cost of a flash drive's early demise.
However, I wanted find out just how much time I might save and then balance
that against the cost of the flash drive.
