Reassign external drive letter

Hi,

I have an external USB hard drive that used to be assigned the F drive
letter by Windows XP when plugged.

With no apparent reason, Windows changed the assigned letter to G.
This messed up all the pointers I had to files stored on this drive,
and I had to recreate them all.

Is there a way to reassign a letter for a USB drive if this happens
again?
