(Unless your keyboard is somehow special, bin it and buy a new one.
They cost almost nothing.)
Is it possible to reassign the delete function to a
different key in windows 2000? This has become necessary
as the particular key has broken.
Yes, it is. Windows 2000 supports key remapping through a registry
tweak. The Resource Kit contains a program to help you create this
registry entry. I don't like the user interface of that program, so I
created a small program that does the same thing, but with a user
interface that I like better. Take a look if you like:

If you want to create the registry value manually, look here:

You need administrative rights to change/create this value, and you
must restart the computer for the changes to take effect.
I know it is possible
to automatically go straight into a particular account
when starting windows instead of loggin in - but cant
remember how!
Most, if not all, keyboards have two DEL keys. Both work for the
Ctrl-Alt-Del combination needed to log on. If one is broken, use the
other one.
If you are working with Pro, not Server, you can remove the
requirement for the Ctr-Alt-Del combination: "Control Panel", "Users
and Passwords", "Advanced", "Requite users to press...". You can also
enable autologon here, like Paul says.
If you have a Server and want autologon, look here:
